Folks:
Thanks for the kind thoughts of support for Fudge as she deals with her new “situation.” I especially took to heart the comment to take every day as it comes and appreciate the time we have together. Fudge has had a great week (now three weeks after her surgery) and displays a great attutude as well as increasing mobility. I’m just concerned that she doesn’t do anything to damage her “other” back leg — that one’s kind of important now! Thanks again to all.
By the way, I think I uploaded a blog avatar of her but I can’t “see” it. Can anyone please let me know if it’s visible when I post?
Fred

Hi to the TriPawds community! Fudge is our 12-year old mixed breed (we think a Chow/Lab cross). Several years ago she had a sarcoma on one front leg that was removed successfully. But the doctor warned that she had a good chance of developing another at some time. I expected it would probably be where the first tumor was, but in March we found a ping pong ball sized tumor on her left rear leg. After several discussions about alternatives, we decided that an amputation was the safest bet. Her vet put it this way: “If you either do surgery or do nothing, you’ll probably be putting her to sleep within eight months. With the amputation she may have three to five more good years. A no-brainer!
She had the surgery two weeks ago yesterday. She’s been home since this past Sunday, and walking surprisingly well, although she clearly still has some issues, especially on stairs. Her attitude is good and I see no evidence of pain. Fingers crossed for her continued positive adapting to being a tripawd!
